Today people are commemorating the centenary of 11-11-11.
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 the First World War ended. At this time in 1918 Big Ben sounded to mark the end of the war.
Today in London, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and India, as well as in other countries of the world, there are ceremonies and displays to remember the people who died in the First World War.
At 11 o´clock there was a 2 minute silence and church bells rang.
People wore red poppies. This is a symbol to remember the people who died.
There are buildings with displays of poppies.
There was a procession of 10,000 people through London. ("The People´s Procession")
Animals such as horses, dogs and pigeons also participated in the war and we remember them too.
At Canterbury Cathedral there is a large sculpture of a war horse.
The popular children´s author, Michael Morpurgo, wrote a book about war horses ("War Horse") and it was made into a film. This beautiful story is in the library.
Faces of soldiers were drawn on the sand of beaches. This is Walter Tull, the first black soldier in the British army.
10,000 torches were lit in the moat of the Tower of London.
