Did you know... Thanksgiving is on 22nd November this year?



5 Fun Facts

  1. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and it is a holiday in the USA.
  2. The First Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621. The Pilgrims from England and the Native Americans (from the Wampanoag tribe) shared a meal to give thanks for the harvest that year.
  3. Families come together to celebrate and eat a special dinner. They eat turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes and vegetables. For dessert they have pumpkin pie.

     4. There is also an enormous parade in New York. Three million people attend and 45 million people watch on TV.

     5. People like to watch American football.

Did you know...?

Today people are commemorating the centenary of 11-11-11.

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 the First World War ended. At this time in 1918 Big Ben sounded to mark the end of the war.

Today in London, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and India, as well as in other countries of the world, there are ceremonies and displays to remember the people who died in the First World War.

At 11 o´clock there was a 2 minute silence and church bells rang.

People wore red poppies. This is a symbol to remember the people who died.

There are buildings with displays of poppies.

There was a procession of 10,000 people through London. ("The People´s Procession")

Animals such as horses, dogs and pigeons also participated in the war and we remember them too.
At Canterbury Cathedral there is a large sculpture of a war horse.
The popular children´s author, Michael Morpurgo, wrote a book about war horses ("War Horse") and it was made into a film. This beautiful story is in the library.

Faces of soldiers were drawn on the sand of beaches. This is Walter Tull, the first black soldier in the British army.


10,000 torches were lit in the moat of the Tower of London.

Diwali 2018

This year Diwali is celebrated on 7th November.

This is an important Indian festival. People wear new clothes, decorate their houses with rangoli and diya (lanterns), make special food and watch firework displays.

In Year 4 we´ve been revising... the family.



Bonfire Night


This is the rhyme that British children chant on Guy Fawkes Day (Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night).
Bonfire Night is a very popular festival in Britain. Families and friends celebrate by going to a party with a bonfire, fireworks and typical food such as toffee apples, hot dogs, jacket potatoes, parkin cake and toffee.
